HYDERABAD, SEPT. 11. In keeping with the decision to have multi-locational manufacturing facilities for its glass business, Hindustan Sanitaryware & Industries is looking at both options acquiring a unit or setting up a greenfield project. Simultaneously, it is holding discussions with a few sick units for acquisition. The issue would be taken up by the board next month, according to the company's Chairman and Managing Director, R. K. Somany. While taking reporters around the glass manufacturing facility in Hyderabad, Mr. Somany announced the completion of its modernisation at a cost of Rs. 100 crores. Taken up in 1999 its has been implemented in stages and is complete now with the commissioning of the second SORG deep refiner (SDR) furnace. The visit coincided with the commissioning. The company has sanitaryware manufacturing facilities in Bibinagar (30 km from Hyderabad) and in Bahadurgarh (Haryana), besides one glass manufacturing facility in Hyderabad. The latter is the largest glass manufacturing unit in South India and contributes 55 per cent of the company's turnover of Rs. 273 crores (March 2004), with the balance coming from the sanitaryware division. Mr. Somany said the Rs. 19 crore expansion of sanitaryware unit in Bibinagar would be completed by March 2005, and would enhance its existing capacity of 12,000 tonnes annually by 40 per cent. The company is also talking to two European manufacturers for distributing its products under their own brand names. Mr. Somany was hopeful of exporting to these companies during this financial year. At present, Hindustan Sanitaryware exports Rs. 9 crores worth of sanitaryware and Rs. 22 crores worth of glass products. The CMD said its overall strategy was to increase its sanitaryware market share to 40 per cent from 35 per cent, enter high value addition products, position itself as a bathroom solutions provider, and step up exports.
