VISAKHAPATNAM, SEPT. 11. The Minister for Labour and Employment, G. Vinod, on Saturday announced that the State Government would unveil a new labour policy by December-end. The Minister, who was here as part of the exercise to elicit the opinion of trade unions and managements on initiating labour reforms, told reporters that the Congress Government led by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, was in the process of identifying issues and priorities for the welfare of the working class. Later, he held discussions with the Visakha Steel Employees Congress (VSEC) general secretary, Mantri Rajasekhar, and other trade union leaders. Mr. Vinod alleged that the Telugu Desam Party had totally neglected the Labour Department when it was in power for nearly 10 years. He said that while framing the labour policy, he would also take the suggestions of the managements.
Child labour
Describing child labour as a `social evil', he said the Government would take up a massive campaign in rural areas to sensitise parents on discouraging the practice. When his notice was brought to the employment of children in hotels in the city, he said that he was not aware of it. If it was factual, the department officials would take stern action against the managements concerned, he declared.
