TIRUPATI, SEPT. 11. Sleuths attached to the flying squad of the Forest Department have seized 36 red sander logs weighing 816 kg on Yerpedu-Venkatagiri road, around 40 km from here near Nellore border. On being tipped about the possible smuggling of the logs, the sleuths led by the DFO, V. Santhaseela Babu, lay in wait at Chintalapalyam of Yerpedu mandal, when a Tata Mobile vehicle bearing the registration number TN 09 F 0171 sped past without halting.
Driver escapes
After a chase, the range officer, V.S. Sekhar, and the section officer, Javed Basha, caught hold of the vehicle at Nachaneri, while the driver escaped. The logs have been valued at Rs. 81,000. Investigation is on.
