Tirupati
By Our Special Correspondent
TIRUPATI, SEP 11. The Chittoor district unit of the CPI-affiliated All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) today expressed its resentment against the new pension scheme announced by the Union Labour Ministry for those working in the unorganised sector. At its meeting here it said that if the salient features were critically analysed it would be seen that far from giving any relief to workers, the scheme would only benefit the Central Government in making `commercial exploitation' of the scheme. The party pointed out that if an employee paid an overall premium of Rs. one lakh, he would get Rs. 700 per month as interest under other investment schemes whereas under the new pension scheme he would get only Rs. 500.
Kerala model preferred
The AITUC preferred the scheme being followed by the Kerala Government. Under this, an employee in the unorganised sector has to pay a premium of only Rs. 10 per month. The meeting decided to hold two conventions at the district level, one in Chittoor on September 27 to press the demand for implementation of the Minimum Wages Act for contract workers in muncipalities and panchayats and the other at Tirupati on September 15 to demand the same for the para-medical staff of private hospitals, nursing homes etc.
