Tension ran high in this town on Thursday when Dr. Ambedkar's bust was found knocked off its pedestal near Nalla Bridge. The incident sparked an immediate agitation by Ambedkar's followers in the town. The Superintendent of Police (East Godavari), V. Navin Chand, told The Hindu over phone from Kakinada that investigation was launched into identifying the culprits who demolished the bust and that a dog squad was summoned from Visakhapatnam to help trace them. ``The situation was broughunder control immediately. The locals have now decided on erecting a life-size statue of Dr. Ambedkar,'' he said.
Dalits' protest
In Kakinada, a sizable number of Dalit students owing allegiance to SC Federation youth, have staged protest demonstration at the Zilla Parishad centre and dharna in front of the Collectorate on Saturday, expressing their resentment over the desecration of Ambedkar statue in Amalapuram the other day. Earlier, they have taken out a protest rally from the Balaji tank centre up to Zilla Parishad junction .A delegation led by Ramjireddi Babu called on the DRO, Suryanarayana, and presented a memorandum demanding stern action against the miscreants responsible for the incident.
