Tanker lorry stir may hit life soon

By Our Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA, SEPT. 11. The ongoing strike by owners of taker lorries has affected the normal functioning of retail petrol and diesel outlets in the district.

Though the strike has not affected the public transport system at present, there are indications that the KSRTC and private bus services will be affected soon once the stock available with the corporation and bus owners is over.

Only a handful of retail outlets in the district functioned today. Almost all the outlets in the southern part of the district remained closed today.

Sale of diesel had been stopped in the district by yesterday evening. Many of the customers who arrived at the outlets were found returning empty handed today.

The promise by the authorities to bring petroleum products in tankers under police protection did not work.

Tanker lorries seized

Following the tanker lorry strike, the police today took into custody 17 tanker lorries in Kollam district. These lorries will be used to transport fuel to the district from centres in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi.

The decision to seize the tankers was taken at an emergency crisis management meeting of the district administration called by the District Collector, B. Sreenivas, and attended by the Kollam SP, S. Sreejith, and the District Supply Officer.

The tankers were taken into custody with the help of the police from various areas in the district. Following the lorry strike, the district started experiencing fuel shortage today. There were heavy queues in front of most of the petrol outlets as vehicle owners went in for a panic purchase. Some outlets put up boards showing `no stock'.

The real effect of the tanker strike will be felt from tomorrow. It is to overcome the same to whatever extent possible that the district administration has seized the tanker lorries.
