Backward Classes panel receives representations

PONDICHERRY, SEPT. 11. The National Commission for Backward Classes concluded its two-day public hearing here yesterday.

The Chairman of the Commission, Justice Ram Surat Singh, along with the other members M.S. Matharoo, B. Baburao Verma and S.K. Purkayastha (member Secretary) held a public hearing in response to the request of the Pondicherry Administration for revision of the Central list for the Union Territory.

In a release issued here yesterday after the Commission wrapped up its hearing, the Director of Social Welfare cum Member Secretary of the State Level Commission for Backward Classes, D. Balakrishnan said that two persons belonging to `Badaga` caste and one from `Boyan` appeared and made representations before the Commission on September 9 while on the next day representations were made on behalf of `Kalingi`, `Kallan`, `Dhakkada` and `Gowda` castes before the Commission.
