GUNTUR, SEPT. 11. The State Government is likely to sanction the post of Urban Superintendent of Police for Tirupati, Warangal and Guntur cities in addition to the existing SPs for those districts within a month, the Director-General of Police, S.R. Sukumara, said here on Saturday.
Proposals pending
The proposals for creating police commissionerates for these cities had been pending for quite some time, but the main hurdle was the population criteria as a minimum of 10 lakh people had to be there in its jurisdiction, which could not be fulfilled, hence as a first stepping stone for the commissionerates, the post of Urban SP would be created in these cities, he said here on Saturday after inaugurating a modern police control room for Guntur. Two more cities, including Rajahmundry, were also under consideration for the Urban SPs, but those were not under active consideration of the State Government, he added. The necessary additional manpower including Armed Reserve would be created for these Urban SPs. The question of creating commissionerates might come up in the next budget session of the Assembly.
Allegations denied
The DGP strongly refuted the allegations that the police force was toeing the line of the Congress and was actively supporting their party cadre in the State. "Elections were conducted while the Telugu Desam Party was in power, but the Congress came to power, despite allegations of we supporting the TDP, which absolves us of all such charges," he added. The force was ready to take any blame if it was proved that it was supporting a particular party, he observed. The police were not a hindrance in the progress of the ongoing talks with the People's War, he said and added that it were naxalites who had snatched a gun from a constable in Vizianagaram district making things difficult for themselves, he observed. The police were in favour of the talks progressing smoothly without hitches, Mr. Sukumara said.
