HYDERABAD, SEPT. 11 . The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Saturday underscored the need to harness technology for the benefit of society to make it a knowledge-based one. He was addressing technology experts and policy-makers at a two-day national conference on `e-Governance' organised by the Hyderabad chapter of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE).
Rajiv Internet villages
Dr. Reddy said e-Governance would provide alternate systems of communication. Computerisation and networking, if taken to every village as envisaged under the Rajiv Internet Village (RIV) programme, would benefit students aspiring to knowledge and teachers trying to update themselves on education techniques. Dr. Reddy said e-Seva had made strides in improving delivery mechanisms and while 218 centres were functioning in the State, 38 more would be opened soon. A total of 6,000 RIV kiosks would come up in the next two years, he said.
Aid from Centre
The Central Government had agreed for assistance in whatever systems the State put in place in G-G (Government) and G-C (Government to Citizen) areas, the Chief Minister said. He had a word of appreciation for professionals who were members of the IETE and said that with their cooperation, it was only a matter of time before the State towered over other States. The Chairman of IETE and Principal General Manager of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, C. Govardhan, presided. He defined e-Governance as delivery of information and services online, which went much beyond mere computerisation of operations in any Government department.
