Help sought for resettlement colonies

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 11. The Outer Delhi Member of Parliament, Sajjan Kumar, has urged the Union Minister of State for Urban Development, Kumari Selja, to lend a helping hand to for raising infrastructure and providing financial help in the resettlement colonies that have come in various parts of the Capital in the recent past.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Kumar said he met Ms. Selja and sought her intervention in the matter. He pointed out that HUDCO had been playing a very crucial role in the housing sector all over the country but had done little for the residents of the Capital.

He said it was time HUDCO stepped in and provided financial assistance to the recently located resettlement colonies. This could include giving help for construction of dwelling units and small flats as well as implementation of various schemes of poverty alleviation.

He disclosed that as per records, there are about 1,100 slum clusters in the Capital. During the last few years, 10 new settlement colonies -- Bawana, Bakkarwala, Molabandh, Hastsal, Madanpur Khadar, Narela, Tikri Khurd, Bhlaswa and Holambi Kalan were developed in the Outer Delhi and East Delhi Parliamentary constituencies.

Mr. Kumar said thousands of affected families were shifted to these colonies.

He said HUDCO should help in construction of kiosks, stalls in these colonies, which could be allotted to the residents for earning their livelihood. Ms. Selja asked the officers concerned to prepare a comprehensive scheme in this regard and put it up for further discussions.
