MCD clerk held on bribery charge

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 11. A clerk in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) for allegedly demanding and accepting bribe from a Class IV employee in lieu of clearing his salary arrears.

According to the police, Vijender Singh, posted in the Central Zone of the MCD, reported to the ACB that Vishwas, a billing clerk, in the same zone was demanding Rs. 3,000 from him for clearing his salary arrears bill worth over Rs. 27,000. Following negotiations, Vishwas reduced the bribe amount to Rs. 2,000.

The ACB laid a trap in the MCD office on Friday and Vishwas was arrested when he allegedly accepted the bribe.

Investigations revealed that Vijender had joined the MCD as a casual worker in 1989. His services were regularised on April 1, 1995, but the order came only in 1998. Vijender was, therefore, supposed to get the arrears of the past three years which Vishwas was not clearing.

Vishwas has been booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act and further investigations are on.
