CHENNAI, SEPT. 11. Adding to the growing list of property-related offences, yet another burglary occurred in the heart of the city. This time 100 sovereigns of jewellery was stolen from a businessman's house on Balaraman Road, Adyar. The incident came to light this morning when inmates woke up. The family of S. Ramesh performed prayers at their pooja hall on the ground floor on Friday evening. They adorned the deities with gold chains. After the prayers, the family went to bed in upstairs. The inmates locked the collapsible iron grille door and bolted the wooden door on the rear side of the house. The culprit broke the lock on the grille gate. He then managed to unlatch the wooden door by using a pole through the window and gained entry into the house. The police said the pooja room was not locked and the jewels adorning the deities were taken away. The house is located on a dead end of the street that branches off from Balaraman Road. The police said the culprit must have scaled the wall of the house from Bhaktavatsalam Nagar Fifth Street, which runs parallel to Balaraman Road. Neighbours were shocked by the incident. They said workers of a private telephone company were digging the road late into the night for laying cables. A group of people came to a house located opposite the scene of crime in the early hours and there was some activity late in the night. "We never even imagined that burglars would strike at our locality," a neighbour said. Though they had seen police vehicles patrolling the area, the burglary proved that the police were clearly outsmarted by criminals, they added. Relatives of the businessman were not willing to talk. An officer attached to the Crime section of the Adyar police station said no offence or burglary was reported. "We have not received any complaint," the officer said when contacted. However, a senior officer of the Adyar district confirmed the incident, adding that special teams were formed to investigate.
Another incident
Five sovereigns of jewellery and about Rs. 25,000 were burgled from the house of a former Chief Secretary who lives at Teynampet. The police said neighbours of the retired official noticed the rear door of the house broken open. They informed the police. The police suspect that the door was not locked enabling the culprits to gain entry. The retired official and his family members had gone out of Chennai three weeks ago.
Choolaimedu robbery
Burglars allegedly entered the house of a travel agency owner at Choolaimedu and escaped with 18 sovereigns of gold jewellery on Thursday night. The police said intruders entered the house located at Sriramapuram and made off with the valuables while Ravi Kumar was away. His wife and children were fast asleep.
