HYDERABAD, SEPT. 11. The State Government will constitute a committee to study the issues related to video piracy and recommend steps to curb the menace that has been assuming alarming proportions of late. This was announced by the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy when a delegation comprising producers and actors met him on Saturday and sought Government action to put an end to video piracy. The assurance came in response to a memorandum submitted to him on behalf of the Andhra Pradesh Film Chamber of Commerce.
Star delegation
The committee will comprise the MD, A.P. State Film, Television and Theatre Development Corporation, K.V. Ramana and representatives of the film industry. The delegation included film stars Chiranjeevi and Nagarjuna, producers Allu Aravind, G. Seshagiri Rao, Krishna and wife, Vijayanirmala, Nitin, Sumanth and Mahesh Babu. They urged the Chief Minister to take immediate steps to curb video piracy, as it was posing serious threat to the survival of the film industry and those associated with it. Video pirates were becoming more organised they said, adding the loss of revenue to both Government and industry was an estimated Rs. 200 crores a year. They suggested the creation of a licensing authority to register video distributors and libraries and a similar authority for cable operators to make them accountable for illegal telecast of films. Above all, they wanted video piracy to be brought under the purview of the A. P. Control of Organised Crime Act.
