Visakhapatnam

VISAKHAPATNAM, SEPT. 11. The relentless struggle of the All-India Railwaymen's Federation (AIRF) against privatisation of the Railway catering department is showing results, according to the AIRF assistant general secretary, Ch. Gandhi.
Move `stalled'
The AIRF had recently stalled the move of the management to privatise the sanitation work at the Visakhapatnam station and successfully prevented the `surrender' of 163 posts, he claimed in a statement here on Saturday. ``We have also been able to stop the privatisation of the catering department in the East Coast Railway Zone at Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Palasa, Khurda Road, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri and Berhampur, thanks to our dialogue with the Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad,'' he said.
Not on agenda
The AIRF had made it clear to the Minister that the handing over of the catering wings through Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) to private contractors was not on the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) agenda, he said. The Minister was misled by someone that the railway catering department was incurring losses but the AIRF could dispel it by presenting the facts to the Minister, he revealed. ``We explained to Mr. Prasad that 86 per cent of catering is already in the hands of private persons and there was an attempt to ruin the Railway catering services by bringing the 14 per cent units run profitably by it under the purview of the IRCTC.
