This Day That Age
Mr. Anthony Eden, Britain's Foreign Secretary, arrived in Bonn on September 12 from Brussels for consultations with Dr. Konrad Adenauer, the West German Chancellor, on the situation after the collapse of the EDC. Mr. Eden said the purpose of his talks would be to promote the unity of Western Europe and to contribute to the peace of the world. Mr. Eden, who was met by Dr. Adenauer, said, "I am very glad to have the opportunity to be in Bonn again. I am grateful for an occasion which makes it possible to have conversation with the Chancellor to whose wisdom and patience it is a privilege to pay tribute." Dr. Adenauer replied, "All that he (Mr. Eden) has just said corresponds with my own thoughts. I am firmly convinced that the trouble and efforts which he has taken upon himself will contribute to the peace of the world." This is Mr. Eden's first visit to Bonn since the signing in May 1952 of the Bonn Conventions. It was France's failure to ratify these conventions and the accompanying European Army Treaty which made Mr. Eden's present visit necessary.
