This Day That Age
It was time for the party. Guests, including Cabinet Ministers, members of the diplomatic corps, MPs, Government officials and the elite of New Delhi had already taken their seats. Photographers were ready with their cameras and one of the hosts had a garland in his hands. But the chief guest was "missing." A guest then turned round and found him sitting next to him far from the seat reserved for the chief guest. The tall bulky Food Minister, Mr. Rafi Ahmed Kidwai, in whose honour the party was arranged to congratulate him on solving the food problem, had walked into the hall unnoticed and taken a seat near the entrance. The hosts rushed to him and pleaded with him to move on to his seat. Chief Justice Mahajan, an old friend of Mr. Kidwai, also joined the hosts in trying to persuade him. But Mr. Kidwai said, "No" and had his tea just where he had sat. Later, he explained, "I attended a similar party recently in Bombay and my hands pained for two days after I had gone round shaking hands with all those present. I also feel embarrassed when tributes and praises are showered on me." But he went round and met the guests before slipping out as quietly as he had come in.
