Functional literacy programme in six panchayats

ERODE, SEPT. 12 . Functional literacy would be imparted under Adult Literacy Programme at six panchayats in the district, in association with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and NSS Unit of the Kongu Arts and Science College, Nanjanapuram, the Collector, D. Karthikeyan, said.

Inaugurating the Adult Literacy Programme through computers recently, he said that TCS, along with Arivoli Iyakkam and National Literacy Mission, had formulated a software to impart adult literacy in rural areas.

They had selected about 500 words to be taught through computers in three months. This would enable the villagers to read and write their names, village names, important bus routes and destinations.

Computers to be given

The Collector said that the NSS unit of the college and TCS would conduct the programme at Thindal, Kadirampatty, Vijayapuri, Mullampatty, Kattupalayam and Elumathur panchayats. The district administration had decided to provide computers to 60 village panchayats this year he said and urged TCS to provide software to these panchayats.

Adult illiteracy that was high in the district added to female infanticide.

The literacy rate was increasing in the district and he hoped the rate would come down to nought by 2007.

The Collector also released a guide on Adult Literacy Programme through Computers. The NSS Coordinator of Bharathiar University, P.K. Manoharan, Director of TCS, Victor, Correspondent of Kongu Arts and Science College, R.M. Devaraja, Secretary of the KVIT Trust, C. Kumarasamy, and Principal of the college, C. Swaminathan, spoke.
