Letters to the Editor
Sir, There is no need to raise such a hue and cry over the publication of the Census data on the growth of population of various religious groups. It throws light on the plight of the disadvantaged sections of society. It also helps in understanding the rationale behind providing special benefits such as reservation for their uplift. Politicians should stop trying to divide the country by spreading fear.
P. Nitin,
* * * Sir, It is ironical to see the Census Commissioner issuing a corrigendum after a lot of acrimonious debate on whether or not a community has registered a steep population growth rate. Before making any document public, it is only proper that the department concerned look into it carefully and ensure that it is foolproof. The Census department should have anticipated the pros and cons of publishing the details.
H.P. Murali,
* * * Sir, If population growth is not checked, we will have to face many hurdles in the years to come. Irrespective of religion, family planning should be taken seriously. It is the responsibility of everyone to help check population growth.
S. Jayachandran,
* * * Sir, The Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad, was right in criticising the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Sangh Parivar for politicising the Census findings. We can do without religious bigots and fanatics who are bent on creating disharmony and on sowing the seeds of divisiveness.
Jairam C. Moryani,
