Farmers' woes

Sir, — I refer to the article "Farmers' distress: cause and cures" (Sept. 10). The author talks of institutional factors such as credit insurance inputs, a more effective social support system, etc. But there are built-in defects in our agricultural tradition.

The average Indian farmer knows only how to grow the same crop year after year on the same land. Also, India has to live with an unpredictable monsoon, consequent floods and droughts, and imbalance in the availability of water.

Added to this is the exponential growth in demand for water by an expanding population. These factors cannot be wished away.

Revolutionary thinking and path-breaking suggestions are therefore the need of the hour.
