Economic bubble?

Sir, — The article, "Punching above its weight?" (Sept. 11) was right in concluding that Britain is living in an economic bubble and is principally a nation of famous shopkeepers. But there is one important factor that keeps Britain on top of things.

As Boris Johnson, Conservative MP for Henley and Editor, The Spectator, noted some time ago: "We may be a very distant second but ... we are still the second most important country on earth. The trick of maintaining such influence, of course, is to go around pretending to be very bumbling and hopeless and self-deprecating, a skill at which we excel."
