Improvement in inflows from Tungabhadra dam

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, SEPT. 12. There has been a significant improvement in the inflows reaching the High and Low level canals from the Tungabhadra dam at Hospet after the recent Tungabhadra Board meeting.

A senior irrigation official dealing with the subject told The Hindu here today that Karnataka had increased the inflows into the High Level Canal to 1,950 cusecs from the previous 1,400 cusecs compared to 1,850 cusecs, which was the normal indent around this part of the season. The extra 100 cusecs was allowed perhaps to cover up the backlog too, he said.

In the case of the Low Level Canal, the inflows touched 560 cusecs today while it was hardly 300 cusecs earlier, compared to the normal 600 cusecs. This is yet to improve and indications are available to that effect, the official said.

As decided by the board, the superintending engineer, Irrigation, Anantapur, and a Karnataka irrigation engineer of his rank are preparing estimates for widening the canals for ensuring proper discharge from the dam. The official said the board is also writing a letter to the Union Government for deployment of Central Industrial Security Force for patrolling the canals to check unauthorised drawals by Karnataka farmers, he said.
