Use lighter bats

Use lighter bats

Sir, _ Sachin Tendulkar's tennis elbow problem is because of his using a heavy bat. He should heed to the advice of his Coach and mentor, Ramakant Achrekar and start using lighter bats. Should he continue with heavy bats, I fear he will have repeated attacks of tennis elbow and this will jeopardise his career. I say this as a man in the medical profession.

Well done, Dravid

Sir, _ Rahul Dravid has done India proud by winning the prestigious `ICC Player of the Year' and `Test player of the Year' awards. His humility in this hour of glory needs to be appreciated. His impeccable behaviour, regards for his relatives and friends and his respect for his mentor, K.K. Tarapore duly match his unique batsmanship. Well done Dravid!

Augurs well

Sir, _ It was heartening to see Rahul Dravid grow in stature at the inaugural ICC awards ceremony. With Irfan Pathan getting recognised as the `Emerging player of the Year' it was a unique honour for Indian cricket. All this should augur well for India in the ICC tournament.

Learn from Australia

Sir, _ Two defeats in quick succession — the tri-series in Holland and the NatWest Trophy in England — amply reflect the miserable failure of Indian cricketers. Indian players should learn from their Australian counterparts about fighting qualities and unflinching national pride. No wonder Australia is rightly called the world champion.

AIR commentary

Sir, _ In the absence of telecast of NatWest cricket matches in the free-to-air channels in Chennai, several cricket enthusiasts were driven to listening AIR's commentaries. Although AIR was to provide both English and Hindi commentaries alternatively, for most part it was in Hindi only. AIR must realise that interest for cricket is there in the non-Hindi belt also. At least in future it should ensure that English and Hindi commentaries are given equal time.

Come on Serena

Sir, _ True champions never give excuses for defeats. Serena Williams is proving an exception by her over-sensitive reaction. Pray, how could a wrong call over a point at one-all score in the decider affect the composure of a champion? Serena should have drawn inspiration from her own fight back from 1-5 down against Clijsters at the 2003 Australian Open. She should be gracious in defeat. At the French Open, she blamed Justine Henin as a bad sport when she lost in the semifinal, claimed she played `around 20 per cent' when she lost the Wimbledon final to Sharapova. The fact is her opponents, whom she used to overpower in the past, have begun to beat her and this she is finding it difficult to accept. Serena would do well to seek her winning ways again than casting aspersions.
