DINDIGUL, SEPT. 12. The Minister for Transport, R. Viswanathan, today said the State Government planned to appoint 22,000 teachers fill the vacancies in schools. Preliminary work has begun. He was addressing a function got up to mark the Teachers' Day here. Mr. Viswanathan said that though it faced an acute financial crisis, the Government did not cut funds for education, health and police. Teachers should realise their responsibility and work for the welfare of society. Primary school teachers had more responsibilities, as they moulded the minds of students, he said. The Transport Department issued free bus passes even to students of private schools and colleges. This entailed Rs. 450 crores on the Department. The Collector, S. Murugaia, congratulated teachers who had received the best teacher awards. Later, the Minister honoured best teachers and heads of various schools. The Chief Educational Officer, Rama. Pandurangan, spoke.
