Train services resumed

By Our Special Correspondent

HUBLI, SEPT. 12. Train services between Londa and Vasco-da-Gama, which were disrupted because of landslips in the ghat section six days ago, were resumed on Sunday.

The newly laid track between Caranzolem and Dudhsagar was opened for traffic with a goods train comprising 54 wagons making the first run.

A major landslip on September 6 disrupted the rail link between Goa and its hinterland.

The driver of a triple engine, Abdul Hameed, noticed the landslip at Caranzolem and alerted the authorities.

Two express trains were to pass through the area within two hours of landslip.

P. Sriram, Principal Chief Engineer of South Western Railway, who supervised the work, said landslip occurred on a 60-metre stretch of the track between two slopes.

The track could not be cleared for traffic soon because of heavy rain. Mr. Sriram said the Railways had to use heavy machinery to remove rocks and soil from the track.

The work was expected to be over on Saturday, but it could be completed only on Sunday.

The Railways proposed to construct retaining walls on either side of the track to prevent landslip in the future, he added.
