Thanjavur
By Our Staff Reporter
THANJAVUR, SEPT. 12. `Narikuravas' of Ezhumarthidal at Thiruvalanchuzhi near Kumbakonam have become successful entrepreneurs. Forming themselves into a self-help group, `Vidiyal', they have been making beads and other products. They displayed their products at an exhibition held at Thiruvalanchuzhi on Friday. The Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, who distributed loans to the SHGs at a function got up as part of the exhibition, lauded their initiative. The `narikuravas' told the Collector that they had house-site titles and ration cards, and were sending their children to school. They also learnt how to sign with the help of the `Arivoli' programme volunteers. The `narikuravas' demanded that a road be laid from Thiruvalanchuzhi to Ezhumarthidal, a one-km stretch, and that toilet facilities be provided in their areas. The Collector promised to consider their demands. The Bishop of Kumbakonam, Peter Remigius, and the Kumbakonam Multi-purpose Society secretary, Anthony Joseph, took part in the function.
