Perambalur
By Our Staff Reporter
PERAMBALUR, SEPT. 12. A sum of Rs. 1 crore has been sanctioned to the district, under the `Arivoli' Continuing Education Programme, according to the Collector, D. Vivekanandan. He was addressing a function got up to mark the `International Literacy Day' at Dhuvathaikulam. While the first instalment of Rs.94 lakhs was released last year, Rs. 1 crore was sanctioned this year. The funds would be used for providing more facilities to the `Arivoli' centres and bringing a large number of illiterate men and women under the scheme, he said. Mr. Vivekanandan said only five out of the 329 village panchayats achieved cent per cent literacy. They were Dhavuthaikulam in Ariyalur block, Pilimisai in Alathur block, Kandiratheertham in Tirumanur block, Periyavalayam in Jayamkondam block and Tiruvalanthurai in Veppanthattai block. Hence, the programme co-ordinators should strive to achieve this distinction in their areas, he said. The literacy percentage of men and women was 77 and 54 respectively. The Collector said the programme benefited an estimated 1.40 lakh illiterate persons, including 78, 600 women, since it was introduced in July last year. The district had 343 CEP centres. The District Programme Co-ordinator, R. Kamalakannan, said a special drive was launched for enrolling unlettered members of the self-help groups. The Ariyalur MLA, P. Ilavazhagan, spoke.
