By Our Staff Reporter
THANJAVUR, SEPT. 12. The municipality has decided to restrict private involvement in removal of garbage to nine specific places instead of four wards to improve sanitation in the town. K. Sultan, chairman, Thanjavur Municipality, told The Hindu that private parties would be asked to concentrate on specific places, namely Serfoji Market, Kamaraj Market, Poochandai Market, Karanthai, Old Bus Station, New Bus Station, Town Bus Stand, the area around Thanjavur Cauvery Wholesale Market and Gandhiji Road. The new approach will help improving sanitation, he said. A resolution would be adopted in this regard at the municipal council meeting. Mr. Sultan said revenue to the municipality would improve once 50 new shops constructed at various places by the body were auctioned. Drinking water scarcity was less in this municipality compared to the situation in other municipalities, Mr. Sultan said. Besides Vennar pumping station, which is an added advantage to the town, and Thirumanur pumping station, new borewells have been sunk. There are 17 overhead tanks fitted with power motors, and 1,110 public taps. Water is also supplied in lorries and tractors. Water sports have been introduced in Sivaganga Park at a cost of Rs.35 lakhs. The boating facility is being improved using the Rs.12-lakh tourism development fund. New pavements would be constructed and lawns laid.
