CHAMARAJANAGAR, SEPT. 12. The Deputy Commissioner, Harsh Gupta, said here on Saturday that 100 quintals of rice would be released to each gram panchayat in the district for drought relief works. He was speaking at a meeting of gram panchayat presidents and secretaries to discuss programmes to solve the drinking water crisis in the taluk. He said the construction of check dams and repairs of nullahs could be taken up if the taluk panchayat released the funds to the gram panchayat. He said three quintals of rice would be given to the each beneficiary with the money given to construct houses under the Ashraya Scheme. Three hundred toilets had been constructed in five villages in Kollegal taluk, he added. He said because of the shortage of grants for the construction of toilets in rural areas, one quintal of rice would be given as wages. Mr. Gupta stressed the need for attention to watershed management programmes to improve groundwater levels in the district. He said yellow ration cards had been issued to 2.30 lakh beneficiaries in the district covering 85 per cent of those entitled to. The Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, Shivanna, said of the Rs. 5 crores grant released to the zilla panchayat for drinking water projects in the district, Rs. 2 crores had been spent. The Chamarajanagar MLA, Vatal Nagaraj, the Santhemaralli MLA, Druvanarayan, the taluk panchayat president, Rajagopal, and the panchayat vice-president, Chikkaswamy, attended the meeting.
