MYSORE, SEPT. 12. The Mysore City Corporation (MCC) will take up road widening work in the city at a cost of Rs. 2 crores as part of the Dasara preparations. A team of officials, led by the Mayor, Daskhinamurthy, will carry out an inspection on Monday to identify roads that need to be widened to cope with the increase in the number of vehicles. Though the corporation had sought Rs. 10 crores for the purpose, the Government has sanctioned Rs. 2 crores and the work is to be completed before Dasara; the festivities begin on October 15. However, the work entails reducing the size of the footpaths on certain roads and this may pose a danger to the pedestrians. But the officials tried to allay fears that the safety of pedestrians would be compromised and pointed out that certain roads had wide footpaths that were termed as unnecessary. The corporation will identify such footpaths where the number of pedestrians using it at any given time was low and take up road widening work, according to the officials. It was pointed out that there were more than three lakh registered vehicles plying on the city roads not to mention the large number that pass through the city. As a result, road traffic was chaotic and there was a need to widen the roads, the officials added. However, the Mayor said the work would be taken up wherever it was possible and feasible and pedestrian safety would not be compromised. He said the corporation would shortly prepare a blueprint to build subways and underpasses for pedestrians at important traffic junctions. Several projects were in the offing for Mysore for which funds would be available from the Union Government under the urban development schemes. "I am keen on taking up subways and other infrastructure development works with funds the details of which were made known at the All India Mayors' Conference in New Delhi," Mr. Dakshinamurthy said.
