CHAMARAJANAGAR, SEPT. 12. The family members of Dasanoor Mahadevaiah (55) and some supporters brought Mahadevaiah's body to the Deputy Conservator of Forests' office and staged a demonstration on Sunday. They were seeking the suspension of mobile forest squad officials whom they blamed for the suicide of the wood merchant. The officials had caught Mahadevaiah while he was transporting pieces of firewood in a lorry from Halepura village to Chamarajanagar town on Friday. While in custody, Mahadevaiah consumed poison the same night and died in KR Hospital, Mysore. The protestors said Mahadevaiah was not transporting the firewood illegally. They said he had purchased the firewood and was transporting it to Chamarajanagar town. They alleged that Mahadevaiah committed suicide as the officials had harassed him. However, the mobile forest squad officials claimed that they had taken Mahadevaiah into custody after seizing the lorry as he was transporting the firewood illegally. The protestors urged the Government to suspend the officials responsible for the suicide of the wood merchant. The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Machaiah, met the protestors and promised them that steps would be taken to punish the guilty. Then, the protestors withdrew their demonstration. Meanwhile, the Chamarajanagar MLA, Vatal Nagaraj, has urged the Government to release compensation to the family of the dead.
