KANNUR, SEPT. 12. The Malabar Devaswom Employees' Union (MDEU) has demanded that the State Government take steps to constitute the Malabar Devaswom Board for protecting the temples and rights of the temple employees in the region. A resolution adopted at the State conference of the CITU-affiliated union at Parassinikkadavu here today said that though there were thousands of temple employees and over 10,000 temples in the Malabar region, the State Government was yet to enact a unified law to govern these temples and wages of the employees.
Court order
The High Court had ordered the State Government to constitute a Malabar Devaswom Board several years ago and the order had been repeated recently, the resolution said adding that the Government had yet to take any effective steps in this regard. Terming this apathy as injustice to the employees, their families and devotees, the resolution also said a section of `Hindu extremists' was using temples as platforms for mobilising funds and launching propaganda. The State conference was inaugurated by the Perambra MLA, T.P. Ramakrishnan, who is also State secretary of the CITU. The MDEU State president, V.V. Dakshinamoorthy, presided over the function. The conference also demanded rectification of anomalies in the revised wages.
