Mayor to meet

wayside vendors

Thrissur Sep. 12. The Mayor, K. Radhakrishnan, will meet representatives of wayside vendors at his chamber on September 14, according to a press release.

Doctoral programme in nursing

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM SEPT. 12. The Government has given its nod for introducing a doctoral programme at the Nursing College attached to the Medical College here with assistance from the World Health Organisation (WHO). The Health Secretary, K. Ramamurthy, handed over a letter expressing its consent to join the National Consortium for Development of the Doctorate Programme to the Nursing Council in Delhi recently. The Council had earlier identified the College as one of the eight institutions in the country for collaboration with the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, for offering the doctoral programme. The Hindu had reported about delay in communicating the consent to the Council.

KSRTEU threatens stir

The Kerala State Road Transport Employees Union (KSRTEU) has threatened to go on strike from November 7 if the Corporation management does not concede the demands of the workers. The demands include hike in dearness allowance from the present 32 per cent, confirmation of services of empanelled employees and granting of promotion for various categories of employees.

Protect Thirunavaya: VS

The Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan, has urged the Government to take urgent steps to protect the entire site at Thirunavaya in Malappuram district where `Mamankom' is believed to have taken place. In a statement here today, Mr. Achuthanandan said it was not enough to protect just seven cents in the locality as a historical monument.

RSP plea to check inflation

The RSP State secretary, T.J. Chandrachoodan, has called upon the Central Government to take urgent steps to check the rise in inflation rate. Participating in a joint meeting of RYF State and district-level office-bearers here today, Prof. Chandrachoodan said the Central Government had failed in arresting the price rise. If urgent measures were not taken, the lives of ordinary Indians would become miserable in the days to come, he said.

Protest against grading system

The Kerala Arabic Munshies Association today protested against the move to go in for grading system in the SSLC examination this year itself. Its general secretary, M. Emamudeen, said in a statement that sufficient planning had not been gone in the matter. The internal assessment proposed under the system would be hard on the pupils.

Essay, short story contest

Thrissur Sept. 12. Entries have been invited for essay, short story and cartoon competitions being held as part of the sixth State conference of the All India Bank Officers' Confederation (AIBOC) to be held here on October 16. Students from colleges affiliated to the universities in the State can take part in the essay competition. The subject is `Commercialisation of education'. Each essay should not exceed 1,000 words. The head of the institution should certify the essays. Only bank employees can participate in the short story and cartoon competitions. Entries should reach the general convener of the AIBOC conference (SIBOA Centre, Mission Quarters, Thrissur -- 680 001, before October 5. For more details contact Ph: 0487-2423072. The winners would be given cash prizes, a press release said.

Normal petroleum movement soon

Kochi Sept. 12. The movement of kerosene, petrol and diesel throughout Kerala is expected to become normal soon with the private tanker lorry operators calling off their indefinite agitation. There was severe disruption in the movement of petroleum products to various parts of the State since the agitation began on September 8 midnight. The strike was called off following an amicable settlement arrived at a meeting called by the Transport Commissioner, K.P. Somarajan, and the Ernakulam District Collector, Mohammed Hanish, late last night. As per the settlement reached, the oil companies will pay Rs. 25,000 on each vehicle rented from tanker owners. Decision on renewal freight charges would be taken by October 15. — PTI

KOTTAYAM Sept 12. The 425th anniversary of the St Mary's Orthodox Church (Cheriyapally) was inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, here today. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Chandy stressed the need to resolve the conflicts in society in a peaceful manner and asked the members of this ancient parish to adapt themselves to the changed social situation than the one prevailed during the founding of the centuries-old church.

Memorial lecture

THRISSUR SEPT. 12. The writer and academic, M.K. Sanu, will deliver the Poulose Mar Poulose Memorial Lecture at the Vailoppilli Hall of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi here on September 14. The Metropolitan of the Church of the East, Mar Aprem, will preside. The speakers include K. Ajitha, according to a press release.

DYFI marches

Kozhikode Sept. 12. The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) will take out protest marches to the DDE Office here, mini civil stations, at Vadakara and Koyilandi at 10 a.m. on Monday against the State Government's education policies.

Janmabhumi edition

The RSS leader, K. Balaram, inaugurated the Kozhikode edition office of Janmabhumi at East Nadakkavu here today. Swami Vivekamritachaitanya, Amritanandamayi Madom, Vellimadukunnu, delivered the benedictory address on the occasion.
