THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 12. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Consumer Coordination Council (CCC) will develop a mechanism that will facilitate screening of all complaints by patients and doctors and try to resolve it.

When a case is filed in a consumer forum for medical negligence, before admitting the case it should be screened by a committee comprising senior medical experts in consultation with the IMA and the CCC, a joint declaration made by the IMA and the CCC here today said. When a medical negligence case is heard in the consumer forum, a specialist should be included among the members who hear the case and due importance should be given to the expert opinion, the declaration said.

In order to improve the deteriorating doctor-patient relationship, better communication should be established between medical fraternity and patients, it said.

The declaration was made at a national workshop on ``Accessibility and affordability of quality health services in India'' organised jointly by the IMA and CCC here.

To improve the relation between patients and doctors, the patients should be educated by the CCC and its member organisations on the importance of sharing all relevant information freely and frankly with the doctors. The declaration affirmed that the Patients and Hospital Charter should be made available in all health care institutions and the rights of the patients and their families for information and medical records should be respected.
