Kochi shipyard to begin production of warships

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, SEPT. 12. The manufacture of warships will begin shortly at the Kochi Shipping Yard, said the Flag-Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command (Kochi), Vice-Admiral S.C.S. Bangara.

He was talking to reporters after visiting Mani Higher Secondary School his alma mater here recently. Preliminary works for the production of warships had begun and the project would take shape by this year-end, he said.

Training academy

With nearly 60 per cent of the work complete, the Rs. 600 crore-naval training academy at Ezhimala in Kerala would begin functioning in a year.

It will house and train 900 navy personnel, while excess capacity would be utilised for sailors and officers from other countries.

Ten to 12 countries were presently utilising Indian Navy's training establishments at various places.

"Naval units of Central Asian Republics, African, South-East Asian and Middle East countries are coming to India for training," he said. Earlier, Indian Naval personnel were sent to Soviet Union for training. But the situation has changed with that country's disintegration, he said.

Frequent clashes

On the reports of frequent clashes between the Indian fisherman and Sri Lankan, and Pakistan Naval units, the Vice-Admiral attributed this to errors in calculating marine borders by fishermen who lacked navigational aids. Education and training could help prevent such incidents, he said.

"There is perfect co-ordination among INS Coast Guard, Indian Navy and the Sri Lankan and Pakistani naval units. There are several incidents that stand testimony to this," Vice-Admiral Bangara said.

Frontline navigational instruments were deployed only at war fronts. In the absence of these gadgets it was difficult to prevent inadvertent crossing of maritime borders. Going by statistics, issues involving fisherman with the Navy of neighbouring countries were just stray incidents, he said.
