KOLLAM, SEPT. 12. The `I' group in Kollam district has split. The splinter group opposed to the senior Congress leader, K. Karunakaran, is being led in the district by the former Electricity Minister, Kadavoor Sivadasan.
To maintain identity
The aim of the splinter group is to maintain the `I' identity. The splinter group led by Mr. Sivadasan swears loyalty to the party high command. The decision to split the group in the district was taken at a closed-door meeting held at the Guest House here this afternoon. The meeting was attended by the former DCC president and Khadi Board vice-chairman, K.C. Rajan, the former DCC president and chairman of the Toddy Workers Welfare Fund Board, N. Azhakesan, the former DCC general secretary and president of the Agricultural and Rural Development Bank, Chithara Madhu, the chairman of the Kollam Development Authority, A.A. Samad, and the former DCC vice-president, K. Karunakaran Pillai. Today's development in Kollam is seen as a follow up of the anti-Karunakaran `I' group State-level meeting at the residence of the Congress leader, M.P. Gangadharan, in Thiruvananthapuram two days ago. Mr. Sivadasan had attended the meeting with the party leaders, C.N. Balakrishnan, Therambil Ramakrishnan, the Civil Supplies Minister, Adoor Prakash, and the former Minister, K.V. Thomas.
DCC revamp
The split in the `I' group here portends a DCC revamp in the offing. The immediate aim of the splinter group would be to join hands with the `A' group and call for the removal of the DCC president, Sooranadu Rajasekharan. The thrust of today's meeting was centred around this aspect. From the splinter group, two names are being considered for the DCC president's post. They are Mr. Rajan and Mr. Karunakaran Pillai. Sources said that Mr. Rajan and Mr. Pillai had attended the meeting in spite of Mr. Karunakaran directly calling them up and asking them not to attend the meeting. It is also reliably learnt that Mr. Sivadasan would use the new group to project himself as the right man for the KPCC vice-president's post.
