`Tourism projects will be completed in a time-bound manner'

ALAPPUZHA, SEPT. 12. In an effort to give a new impetus to the development of tourism in the State, the Tourism Ministry will make functional various ongoing projects in 100 days and promulgate law to guide and control the houseboat industry, the Tourism Minister, K.C. Venugopal, has said.

Participating in a `Meet-the-press' programme organised by the Alappuzha Press Club here today, Mr. Venugopal said the work on 28 tourism projects in various districts would be completed in 100 days. Besides, 16 projects, which had been completed, would be handed over to various agencies during the period, he said.

Development agenda

Mr. Venugopal said the Government's development agenda were not confined to executing big projects and constructing big buildings. ``The Government has ambitious projects for the development of village tourism and promotion of eco-tourism,'' the Minister said.

Mr. Venugopal said the complaints on the shortcomings of houseboat industry had come to the notice of the Government. The Government would bring in a legislation to guide and regulate the functioning of houseboats, Mr. Venugopal said.

Curbs on pollution

The Minister said the houseboats operating in the backwaters needed devises to minimise the various types of pollution caused by it. He warned that the Government would deal with an iron hand the illegal activities in the name of tourism.

Backwater tourism

He said the Government would also focus on the development of backwater tourism. Alappuzha would be made the gateway of backwater tourism in the State. Development projects would be initiated in Alappuzha with this perspective, he said.

Master plan ready

A master plan for the development of Alappuzha had already been drawn up, he said. The plan would be executed after discussions with various sections.

He said that a memorandum of understanding had been signed for the development Alappuzha port.

Work of separate terminals for houseboats and other boats would be completed at Punnamada in Alappuzha, Mr. Venugopal said.

The work of the waterside amenity centre at Pallathuruthy would also be completed soon, he said.

Canals to be cleaned

The canals of Alappuzha town would be cleaned and beautified.

The Government had decided to allot Rs. 4 crores this year for the purpose. To questions on the possibility of the development of pilgrim tourism in the State, Mr. Venugopal said discussions would held with heads of various groups on how to promote pilgrim tourism without causing harm to the sanctity of religious places in the State.

Sabarimala facilities

Mr. Venugopal, who is also the Minister for Devaswom, said that a meeting would be held in Thiruvananthapuram on September 15 to review the facilities existing for pilgrims at Sabarimala temple and the new arrangements to be made there for the coming season.
