Meet on care of children with

cardiac problems today

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has convened an emergency meeting of officers on Monday to review the status of the poor children with cardiac problems who were referred to hospitals for assistance in and around the twin cities.

Dr. Reddy has taken note of reports that there was undue delay on the part of hospitals while attending to the children with congenital heart diseases.

On being told that some of the patients had to face unpleasant response in hospitals, he is said to have decided intervene personally and sort out all the issues relating to the children and their treatment, according to a press release.

Bajrang Dal plans campaign against terrorism

HYDERABAD: The State unit of the Bajrang Dal on Sunday decided to organise a week-long anti-terrorism campaign from October 1 and to take up membership drive for a month from November 20. A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of zonal leaders (pramukhs) of the organisation here, T. Muralidhar Rao, general secretary, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (AP Paschim), T. Yaman Singh, co-convener of Bajrangdal, and P. Pratap, convener of the Bajrang Dal's legal cell, told a press conference.

During the campaign, Bajrang Dal activists would hold demonstrations throughout the State against terrorism. The protest planned in the wake of the recent arrest of some alleged militants in the city. The organisation aimed at enrolling one lakh members in the State during the month-long drive, they said.

Demand for quota in private sector

HYDERABAD: The Dalit Bahujan Sangharshana Samiti has demanded reservations in the private sector and sought statutory reservations for Muslims.

In a resolution, the executive committee of the samiti, at a meeting here on Saturday, urged the Government to implement land reforms and to take steps for checking attacks on minorities.

The meeting, which was organised in support of reservations in the private sector and Muslims, demanded stringent punishment to those who damaged the statue of B.R. Ambedkar in Amalapuram.

Transco preparing to meet demand

HYDERABAD: The APTransco is strengthening its power system to meet the demand of the kharif season. Rachel Chatterjee, Chairperson and Managing Director, AP Transco, in a communication to CMDs of Discoms and field officers, stated the power system has been tuned to meet the energy requirement of 160 to 170 million units daily if the Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar reservoir levels are further improved following another spell of good rain.

The distribution network in East and West Godavari, Chittoor, Aanantapur, Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda, Medak, Nizamabad, Karimnagar and Warangal districts has been overloaded due to unprecedented energy demand. Administrative solutions are required to contain the spurt in demand attributable to unauthorised agricultural connections.

Time is also required to strengthen the power system, according to the Chairperson.

Alarming rise in AIDS cases

Hyderabad: The prevalence of HIV infection in the State was alarming with 50 per cent of the new patients being in the age group of 15-24. Among pregnant women, HIV prevalence was 1.25 percent and in seven districts it was 2 per cent, said K. Damayanthi, project director, A.P. State AIDS Control Society.

She was speaking at a seminar on `HIV and Gastrointestinal tract' at Global Hospital here on Sunday. Ms. Damayanthi linked the situation in the State to that prevailing in South Africa in 1991-92. Nearly one tenth of the HIV positive patients in the country happened to be in Andhra Pradesh and the State was next only to Maharashtra in total number of patients. Ms. Damayanthi attributed the high HIV prevalence in the State to rampant risk behaviour of people with the condom use being lowest and sex outside marriage the highest.

Three die in fire mishap

NELLORE: Three persons died and four others sustained burns in a fire accident at Porlukatta area of Sundarayya Nagar near municipal office, here, last night. Many houses were destroyed in the mishap. Explosion of crackers in a house is said to be the cause of the fire mishap.

Dengue case in Karimnagar?

KARIMNAGAR: A three-year-old girl from Shatrajpalli village of Vemulawada mandal in the district died last night reportedly due to dengue.

According to reports, the girl, Madhavi, had been suffering from fever since last one week and she was treated for four days in a private hospital in Vemulawada. When her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to Karimnagar hospital. But, doctors there advised her parents to take her to Hyderabad. She died while undergoing treatment in a private hospital.

Honour for poet

HYDERABAD: The California-based World Academy of Arts and Culture awarded the honorary degree of doctor of literature to T. Ashok Chakravarthy, an employee of the Andhra Pradesh State Cooperative Bank Limited for his contribution to literature. The D. Litt degree was presented to him during the XXIV World Congress of Poets held in Seoul from August 29 to September 5.

Bek Han-Yi, president, Korean organising committee, presented the degree to Mr. Chakravarthy who read poems at the congress, including `The Rag Picker', which has been hailed by the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, according to a press release.

Girl dies in suicide pact

ANANTAPUR: A girl died and another is in a critical condition after they consumed pesticide in a suicide pact at Kammuru village in Kuderu mandal in the district on Sunday.

According to the police and family members, Shanta (18) and Irfan (18) were close friends. The parents of Shanta chided her four days ago as she did not go to wage work.

The two girls were peeved over it and decided to end their lives together and consumed pesticide. While Irfan died before being brought to hospital, Shanta's condition was said to be critical.

Isolated rain likely

HYDERABAD: The low pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal off north Orissa coast became well marked on Sunday and is likely to concentrate into a depression.The State, however, was out of the system's influence. On Sunday there was isolated rain in Telangana and Rayalaseema while dry weather prevailed in coastal Andhra. Kurnool and Kaleswaram recorded a rainfall of 1 cm each.Isolated rain is likely in the three regions of the State on Monday, according to a forecast.

Ex gratia announced

KARIMNAGAR: The Collector, C. Parthasarathi, has announced payment of ex gratia of Rs. 10,000 to the next of kin of the handloom weaver, G. Bhumaiah, who reportedly died of starvation and ill-health in Padmashali Veedhi in the town on Saturday.

The Collector visited the house of the weaver on Sunday and consoled the family members. He announced widow pension to the weaver's wife, a self-employment scheme to his son from the BC Corporation, self-employment training to his two daughters in the Mahila Pranganam. The BC Corporation Executive Director, Srinivas, the Mandal Revenue Officer, Chandramohan, and others accompanied the Collector.

Coop. body office-bearers

Hyderabad: S. Ramananda Swamy has been elected president of the Telangana Co-operative Gazetted Officers' Association at the meeting of their general body here on Sunday.

K. Chennaiah was elected associate president, Mohd. Yakoob Ali vice-president and V. Prabhakar general secretary.

Other office-bearers are: K. Sri Hari, cultural secretary, M. Rajalinga Goud, organising secretary, G. Laxman, joint secretary-I, M. Rajesham, joint secretary-II and P. Pentaiah, treasurer. A 10- member executive committee was also elected, a press release said.

Illicit liquor destroyed

WARANGAL: The police raided Komatipally Thanda under the Kakatiya University police station limits and destroyed 2,000 litres of jaggery wash and 200 litres of Illicitly Distilled (ID) liquor on Sunday.

The Sub-Inspector of police, G. Sekhar Goud, said a team led by the Hanamkonda Circle Inspector, J. Surender Reddy, on a tip off, conducted raids in various hamlets. The team also seized utensils and plastic drums.

Gadicharla birth anniversary

KURNOOL: The 121st birth anniversary of Gadicharla Harisarvothama Rao, dubbed the father of library movement, will be celebrated here on September 14. Mr. Ragichettu Nagireddy of Chennupadu in Manopad mandal of Alampur will be given the Gadicharla award for his contribution to library movement. The president of Gadicharla Foundation, Chandrasekhara Kalkula and secretary, K. Rosaiah, said the function would be held on the premises of Municipal High School, where Harisarvothama Rao was a student.

Eye camp inaugurated

CHITTOOR: The Joint Collector, Rajendra Prasad, inaugurated a free eye camp at PCR College here on Sunday, organised jointly by Jain Sangam Chittoor Chennai Metro North Lions Club and Sankara eye hospital, Chennai. He complimented these associations for organising such a camp to help poor people with eye diseases. Nearly 1,500 people will be screened in the camp and those in need of surgery will be taken to Sankara Hospital, Chennai. Travel, boarding, surgery and spectacles will be free of cost. Subash Jain M.Sarvan, M. K. Jain, Vasu Devan, Sankara hospital, PRO Babu, and principal PCR college principal, Syamala Devi, participated.

Dalit forum's demand

NELLORE: The district units of All-India Federation of Weaker Sections and Dalit Vidyarthi Sena demanded stringent action against those responsible for the desecration of Baba Saheb Ambedkar's statue in Amalapuram town of East Godavari district. The associations sought steps to prevent such incidents in the future.

BJYM meet

NELLORE: The district level executive committee meeting of Bharateeya Janatha Yuva Morcha (BJYM), will be held at Nellore, on September 16.

Camp to treat cleft lip

CUDDAPAH: The Superintendent of Police, V.C. Sajjanar, inaugurated a free medical camp to treat cleft lip patients, organised by Soumya Sai Hospital at Sankarapuram and lauded the doctors for offering to perform surgery on cleft lip patients free of charge. A plastic surgeon of Vijayawada, Dr. C.M.C. Naidu, said success rate in the surgery would be higher among those under 20 years of age. The Cuddapah DSP, M. Ramprasada Rao, participated.

Haystacks gutted

NELLORE: Haystacks spread over seven acres and a cattle shed were gutted, in Varigonda village of TP Gudur mandal, on Sunday, resulting in a loss of Rs. 20,000. Fire tenders from Nellore rushed to the spot and controlled the fire, which was said to be due to burning of crackers.

Teachers' plea

CUDDAPAH: The Panchayati Raj Teachers' Union district president, Ramachandra Raju, on Sunday demanded that the Government resolve the "uncertainty" prevailing in the Education Department and problems of teachers.

The PRTU organised a teachers training camp at the Municipal Urdu Girls High School, in which issues such as leave and pension rules and education-for-all campaign were discussed. The PRTU State vice-president, P. Ramana Reddy, interacted with the teachers and clarified their doubts.
