VIJAYAWADA, SEPT.12. Fire broke out mysteriously on Sunday morning at a house in Suryaraopet that was abandoned after the three members of family residing in it were hacked to death in a property dispute in January this year. Furniture and some household articles worth over Rs. One lakh were destroyed in the fire which broke out around 6 a.m., according to the fire officer, K. Lakshmaiah. A fire tender from the Fire Control Room was rushed to the house to extinguish the flame after a neighbour alerted the authorities about the fire. However, both police and fire services personnel said the actual cause of the mishap was yet to be known and an investigation into the incident was on.
Out on bail
It may be recalled that three members of a family -- Namburi Sundaram, N. Venkatasatya Subramanyeswari, N. Rathnambika, were hacked to death at the house on January 5 which created sensation at that time. Following the murder, police arrested five persons--Uma Venkateswara Rao, Maruthi Kumari, Krishna, Venkat Rao and Venkateswara Rao-- all said to be relatives of the victims on charges of carrying out the killings over alleged property dispute. All the accused are presently out on bail. In fact, the then city Police Commissioner, A.B. Venkateswara Rao, announced that the department would write to the Government to "escheat" the property under dispute as no legal heirs were present.
