Rly time-table

in short supply

Sir — After the Railways announced the release of a new time-table, I had approached the particular counter at the Vijaywada Railway station to purchase the same, I got the stock reply "out of stock".

Subsequently, enquiries at the Satyanarayanapuram Railway Station and Nidubrolu Railway Station also evoked the same reply.

I wonder why the prestigious public sector transport sector does not take sufficient steps to ensure smooth and adequate sale of the time-table books at least on the first 10 days of their release.

I also request the Vijayawada Railway station to arrange a separate counter for platform tickets exclusively.

Inter-linking of rivers welcome

Sir — The proposed inter-linking of rivers is a welcome move as it would not only check the frequent floods in States like Assam but also help provide adequate water supply to perennially drought-prone areas like Rayalseema.

Moreover, a project of such gigantic proportions is bound to generate massive employment potential in the country as it would require lakhs of labourers, supervisors and engineers for construction of various dams, barrages and canals.

The project would also help in generating hydro-electric power that could solve the power crisis faced in the country.

At the same there for taking up the huge project the Government needs enormous funds for which it may have to literally beg from the World Bank. As such experts in the country should think of ways and means to solve the funding problem so that we can generate our resources to meet the cost of the project.

Retain interest rate on EPF

Sir — Slashing of interests on the Employee Provident Fund by the Centre is unbecoming and would harm the interests of lakhs of workers for whom this is the only social security measure. The unilateral decision by the Government would affect several lakhs of people, more so after they retire from the service.

Besides, the State and the Central Governments are frequently hiking the prices of essential commodities like power.

Hence, I request the Government to retain the interest rates on provident fund contributions at 9.5 per cent.

More general bogies required

Sir — The then Railway Minister, Bandaru Dattatreya, before demitting office gave a categorical assurance to provide three general bogies in every express trains in view of the ever increasing rush. But the promise did not materialise.

I request the present Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad, to undertake a travel by general compartment and personally apprise himself of the pathetic conditions of the commuters particularly women.

Secondly, in a country like India where there is an alarming percentage of diabetic patients, no sugar free coffee or tea is made available to such patients. As such the diabetic patients are forced to forego hot beverages.

At a few select stations like Chennai and Secunderabad, sugar free coffee and tea are made available. But they are not available on the trains.

I appeal to the Railway Minister to take necessary steps to solve these two burning problems faced by the ordinary rail commuters.

Recognition for M.Sc (IS) course

Sir — The previous Government introduced M.Sc (I.S) for BCA graduates in the year 2000. The Andhra Pradesh State Council for Higher Education (APSCHE) declared the course as a standard one. As such many BCA graduates opted for M.Sc (I.S.) at the PG level instead of joining MCA and spent each Rs. 80,000 towards tution fees.

The course has no approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Even the M.Sc (I.S.) students today they do not have any career opportunities like MCA students. The M.Sc (I.S.) syllabus and course fee is comparatively more than the MCA course. We request the new State Government to take immediate steps to get the course recognised by the AICTE and help the students get equal opportunities on par with the MCA students.
