Bus fares will go up: Kharge

Bangalore Sept. 12. The Minister for Transport and Water Resources, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, has said that the bus fares will be increased shortly.

Speaking to presspersons after inaugurating the website of the English fortnightly, `Dalit Voice' at the Press Club here on Sunday, Mr. Kharge said the Government had so far not increased the bus fare even though the diesel prices had gone up.

The Karnataka Road Transport Corporation had incurred a loss of Rs. 2 crores. To avoid further losses to the KSRTC and other corporations, the fares had to be increased, he said.

Uma Bharti's effigy burnt

BANGALORE Sept. 12. Workers of the Kamakshipalya and Kaigarikanagar Block Congress and Youth Congress here today took out a procession and burnt the effigy of the former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Uma Bharti, at the Havanur Circle at Basaveshwaranagar.

Addressing the gathering, the Bangalore Urban district Congress president and former Minister, H.M. Revanna, alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party, by misusing the national flag for political ends, was working against the national interests.

He said Ms. Bharti could have obtained bail from the court but she chose to propagate lies against the Congress and spoke ill of the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi, and the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh.

The legislator, Narendra Babu, criticised the former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister for her intemperate outburst against the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh.

Kannada Nadu nominee for polls

Bidar Sept. 12. The Kannada Nadu has nominated Jeevan Singh Grover for elections to the Bidar (reserved) Lok Sabha seat. The president of the Bidar district unit of the party, Ghulam Sattar, said in a press release that the decision was taken on the direction of the party's founder, Vijay Sankeshwar. "We are confident of winning the elections," Mr. Sattar said.

New water pipeline

Chamarajanagar Sept. 12. The Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha president and MLA, Vatal Nagaraj, has said the work on the underground drainage system in Chamarajanagar town will be taken up shortly at a cost of Rs. 15 crores.

He was speaking after reviewing the condition at the T. Narasipur water pumping station at T. Narasipur on Sunday. He said the new water pipeline would be installed at a cost of Rs. 2 crores to supply Cauvery water to the town.

He instructed the pumping station engineers to ensure proper drinking water supply to Chamarajanagar town. The administrative officer of the taluk panchayat, Chandrashekaraiah, was present.

Three Christian priests held

Hubli Sept. 12. The police on Sunday arrested three Christian priests for their alleged involvement in trying to forcibly convert people.

The priests were allegedly trying to lure people with money for conversion at a locality in old Hubli police station limits, the police said.

Tension prevailed in the city after Bajrang Dal activists complained to the police about the alleged conversion, and the three priests were later arrested, the police said. — PTI

Procession

MYSORE SEPT. 12. The Rajkumar Abhimanigala Sangha, Mysore, will take out a procession on Monday seeking the implementation of the demands placed by the film industry before the Government. A release said the Government should implement the demands that had been handed over by the thespian, Rajkumar, on behalf of artistes, producers and directors.

The procession will commence from the Anjaneya Swamy Temple in Mysore Palace and to the office of the Deputy Commissioner where a memorandum will be submitted in this regard.

Minister coming

MADIKERI SEPT. 12. The Kodagu District in-charge Minister, Tanveer Sait, will hold a review meeting here on Monday, an official press release said here on Sunday. This will be the first review meeting after Mr. Sait was named district in-charge Minister.

The Minister would meet the district and local Congress leaders at the Kodagu District Congress Committee office at 11.30 a.m. and conduct the review meeting at 3.30 p.m. in the Deputy Commissioner's office.

He would review the law and order situation at a meeting with the Superintendent of Police at 6 p.m. Mr. Sait is slated to meet the elected representatives of the local bodies of Madikeri taluk on September 14 at 11 a.m.

Fee payment for varsity examinations

BANGALORE Sept. 12. Bangalore University has invited applications for the supplementary examinations for B.A., B.Sc., B.Sc. (FAD), B.Sc. (Speech and Hearing), B. Com., B.B.M., B.H.M., B. Library Science, and B.F.A. degree courses to be conducted during October/November 2004.

The last date to pay the examination fee and to submit the applications to the principals concerned, heads of institutions, and the Directorate of Correspondence Courses is September 25 without fine, September 30 with a fine of Rs. 60, and October 4 with a fine of Rs. 100.

Besides the prescribed examination fee, the students should also pay a marks card fee of Rs. 50, application fee of Rs. 10, and scrutiny fee of Rs. 5. Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe/Backward Tribe students with annual income not more than Rs. 11,000 are exempted from payment of examination fees.

Repeaters other than Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe/Backward Tribe students should pay the examination fee in full, a Bangalore University release said.

Felicitation

MADIKERI Sept. 12. The Kodagu Gowda Samaja Federation will felicitate elected representatives belonging to Gowda community on the Gowda Samaja premises here on September 15, president of the Federation, T.M. Nanaiah, said here on Sunday.

D.V. Sadananda Gowda, MP representing the Mangalore-Kodagu constituency, the Somwarpet MLA, B.A. Jivijaya, and the Madikeri MLA, K.G. Bopaiah, would be felicitated, Mr. Nanaiah told presspersons. The former Minister, D.A. Chinnappa, would be the chief guest.

Heart camp

MYSORE SEPT. 12. Vikram Hospital and Heart Care here will organise a heart check-up camp and public education programme on heart diseases for economically poor sections of society.

A release said that the programme, sponsored by cine star Vishnuvardhan, would be held at Kalamandira on September 17 between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

All slaughter houses in the city have been ordered to remain shut on September 18, on account of Ganesha Chaturuthi, and October 2 on Gandhi Jayanthi, according to a press release issued by the Mangalore City Corporation. The order has been issued as the State Government had declared these two days as meat-free days.

The applications should be submitted to the Convener, SC/ST unit, Administrative Block, Mangalagangotri, the release added.

MANGALORE SEPT. 12. All unauthorised arrack shops will be cleared starting Monday, according to a press release issued by the Mayor, Purandaradasa Kuloor. The move comes following the launch of a drive recently by the Corporation to clear all unauthorised petty shops.
