CHANDIGARH, SEPT.12. The Haryana Governor, A.R.Kidwai, today appreciated the role played by the All India Conference of Intellectuals (AICOI) in expanding the network of associations of intellectuals at the national and State level. The Governor was speaking at a function organised by the Haryana and Punjab units of the AICOI here to give away Punjab-Haryana Rattan Intellectuals Awards-2004. Dr.Kidwai highlighted the role of intellectuals in the development of society and said that their experiences and guidance played a vital role in the development of a nation. His Punjab counterpart and UT Chandigarh Administrator, O.P.Verma, said that only intellectuals could make a nation prosperous and it was their duty to identify the problems facing the nation and suggest ways to resolve them. The former Governor and Chairman of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission, Suraj Bhan, and former Minister and Governor, Bhisham Narain Singh, who is also the National President of the AICOI, expressed their views on the developmental strides taken by Punjab and Haryana. Five intellectuals from Punjab and Haryana each were given away the Punjab-Haryana Rattan Intellectuals Awards for their outstanding service to society. Dr.Kidwai presented a souvenir to each of the awardees while Mr.Verma presented them a turban. The five recipients hailing from Haryana are Rohtak Lok Sabha Member of Parliament, Bhupinder Singh Hooda,t he former Haryana Minister, Ram Parkash, industrialist, Rajender Nath, the Advocate General of Haryana, Ashok Aggarwal, and the Chief Executive Officer of Liberty Shoes, Karnal, Adesh Gupta.The five recipients from Punjab are the Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University,K.N.Pathak, the PGI Director, K.K.Talwar, the Director of Central Scientific Instruments Organisation, R.P.Vajpayee, the Mayor of Chandigarh, Kamlesh, and an industrialist from Gobindgarh, Joginder Pal Singla.
