LUCKNOW, SEPT. 12. The 10-day old lawyers' strike by Oudh Bar Association (OBA) has been temporarily suspended and the agitating lawyers today announced they would resume work from tomorrow. The decision was taken by the joint action committee of the Bar Association following an assurance given by the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav, that he will direct action against erring police officials within two days. The OBA has been demanding criminal prosecution against policemen found guilty of charging with batons to disperse a group of lawyers gathered to protest after the car belonging to the association's former president, L. P. Mishra, was hit by a military vehicle in Lucknow on September 3. Over 50 lawyers were reportedly injured in the incident. Talking to newspersons here, the OBA president, Ashok Nigam, said, ``the hardships faced by the common people following the strike'' and the appeal by the Governor, T. V. Rajeswar, were also taken into consideration while suspending their agitation. He informed that the Chief Minister had discussed with the coordination committee the lawyers' demands for suspension and transfer of four police officers and initiate legal proceedings against those found guilty in the preliminary enquiry into the lathicharge. Mr Nigam said in view of Mr Yadav's assurance to take action within two days and the appeal by the Governor and Acting High Court Chief Justice, the lawyers have decided to suspend their agitation. To a question, he said disciplinary action must also be taken against lawyers if found guilty in the incident. He said FIRs were lodged against 500 lawyers in different police stations. In reply to another question, he said the by-laws of the Bar Council of India and Bar Association had a provision for refusing membership to persons with a criminal background. UNI
