28 BJP nominees for Arunachal polls

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 12. The Central Election Committee of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today finalised a list of 28 candidates for the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly elections.

It will meet again on September 16 to finalise the list of candidates for the Maharashtra polls.

Although there are two Lok Sabha by-elections in Uttar Pradesh — Akbarpur and Mainpuri — the party today declared only Rajendra Kumar Choudhary as its candidate from Akbarpur, which was vacated by the Bahujan Samaj Party leader, Mayawati. In the State by-elections, nine persons, including three women, are being fielded.

The party president, Venkaiah Naidu, said the BJP would contest all the seats in Uttar Pradesh on its own. It will later declare its candidate for Mainpuri, where a vacancy arose as the Samajwadi Party leader, Mulayam Singh Yadav, vacated the seat.

The BJP held power in Arunachal Pradesh, but after dissolving the Assembly, the Chief Minister, Gegong Apang, joined the Congress.
