Transport staff threaten stir

CHENNAI SEPT. 12. The Tamil Nadu State Transport Employees Federation today warned the Government that all trade unions would jointly decide on agitation programmes, if it did not withdraw its ``anti-labour policies.'' A joint meeting of all the trade unions is scheduled to be held in Tiruchi on September 21.

The two-day, ninth State conference of the federation, which concluded here today demanded that the Government abandon its decision on privatisation of routes. It demanded that wage revision talks be started immediately, vacant positions filled and new buses purchased. The CITU leaders including T.K. Rengarajan and A. Sounderarajan addressed the conference.

4 die in accident

DINDIGUL Sept. 12. Four persons were killed and five injured today when a private bus hit a van on the Madurai-Dindigul highway near the Pallapatti junction.

The van, proceeding from Devadhanapatti dashed a tree on roadside. Nine persons, including the van driver, received grievous injuries. Four died at the Madurai Rajaji Government Hospital.

Student drowned

Dharmapuri Sept. 12. A member of a group of 17 students from Cuddalore drowned in the Hogenakkal falls here yesterday. According to the police, the students were bathing when Venkatesan (23) got caught in the current and was drowned.

Fishermen's plea to Government

CHENNAI SEPT. 12. The Tamil Nadu Meenavar Peravai today requested that diesel be made available at subsidised rates to them as in Karnataka, Goa, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

In a press release here, the peravai said fishermen were put to great difficulty because of the increasing cost of diesel. It demanded that all Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan jails be freed and the boats captured by the Sri Lankan authorities be returned.

Call to `devotees sabhais'

CHENNAI SEPT. 12. The Dhandayuthapaniswamy temple at Palani has announced that ``devotees sabhais'' interested in doing service at the temple or implementing any of its welfare schemes could do so. The services would be utilised during festivals and the ``sabhais'' would be informed of the work allocation. The organisations could send in the details to the Joint Commissioner of the temple and register themselves. A meeting of the presidents and secretaries of the sabhais would be held this month-end, says a temple release.

Bottles hurled into DMK office

COIMBATORE Sept. 12. Three bottles filled with fuel were hurled into the premises of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam office during early hours today. However, there was no damage to life or property.

Following this, the city police have provided security at the Coimbatore Institute of Technology auditorium where the party president, M. Karunanidhi, and other senior leaders would participate in the DMK's `Mupperum Vizha' on September 15. The police have been posted in strength on the V.O.C. Park Grounds where he would address a public meeting that evening.

Quoting eyewitnesses the police said three persons on a motorcycle stopped on the flyover opposite the party office, lit the wicks on the liquor bottles and hurled them into the office premises where a number of banners and buntings for the meetings lay stacked.

The bottles hit the ground with a loud sound but did not explode. While attempts to sabotage the meetings were alleged by the DMK's district office-bearers, the police have begun investigations to trace the miscreants. They said the bottles contained kerosene.

DMK condemns violence

CHENNAI SEPT. 12. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam today condemned the violence ``indulged in by the AIADMK'' at a public meeting organised by the party in Villupuram on Friday. An all-party meeting would be called for in the district to decide on the future course of action, the DMK general secretary, K. Anbazhagan, said in a press release. The DMK obtained permission for the meeting but the AIADMK disrupted it, he said.

Appeal

ERODE SEPt. 12. The silver jubilee celebration of the Erode District Pensioners' Association was held today in Erode. The Commissioner of Handlooms and Textiles, V.K. Subburaj, who was the chief guest, spoke about pensioners and their services. Pensioners were not burden to the Government or others, he said. The Managing Director of Sakthi Masala, P.C. Duraisamy, and other State office-bearers of the association spoke. The president of the Erode District Pensioners Association, S. Arumugam, presided.

The meeting urged the Government to revise pensions of Government employees and to introduce medical reimbursement scheme for them.

Special buses

Dharmapuri Sept. 12 . In view of the Tirumala Tirupathi Brahmotsavam festival, the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Dharmapuri Division) would operate festival specials through select routes from September 18 to 25. A TNSTC statement issued here said that the special buses would be plied from Dharmapuri-Tirupathi at 4 p.m., 6 p.m., 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.; Hosur-Tirupathi at 9.15 a.m. and 8 p.m. and Krishnagiri-Tirupathi at 6 a.m., 10.45 a.m., 1.20 p.m. and 9.30 p.m.

Commits suicide

TIRUNELVELI SEPT. 12. The sweeper of a college at Palayamkottai committed suicide today.

The police said C. Muniyandi, 47, of Golden Colony at KTC Nagar had borrowed money for the construction of his house. As he could not repay the loan, he consumed poison.

Water level

MADURAI SEPT. 12. The level in Periyar dam stood at 115.50 feet, with an inflow of 373 cusecs and a discharge of 775 cusecs. The level in Vaigai dam stood at 36.09 feet, with an inflow of 414 cusecs and a discharge of 930 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit was 2,409 mcft.

Idayappatti recorded a rainfall of 9.2 mm followed by Periyar dam — 9 mm, Marudhanadhi — 9mm, Vaigai dam — 8.4 mm, Melur — 8 mm, Manjalar — 5 mm, Kuppannampatti — 4 mm, Tekkadi — 3 mm, Chittampatti — 3 mm and Peranai — 2.6 mm.

Power shutdown

Fund for road works

KARUR SEPT.12 . A sum of Rs. three crores has been allotted to Karur district this year to carry out bitumen topping works for a stretch 60 km, the Collector, G. Ramamoorthy, said here on Saturday.

All the eight panchayat unions in the district would get a portion of the fund to carry out repair works in their areas and the District Rural Development Agency would facilitate the works.

Elections to local bodies

Thanjavur Sept.12 . Elections will be held to 55 vacant posts in various local bodies in Thanjavur district on Sept. 27, according to a press release issued here by the Collector, who is also the district Election Officer, J. Radhakrishnan.

The vacancies include one district panchayat council member, two town panchayat ward members, six panchayat presidents and 46 panchayat ward members.

Nominations can be filed till September 16 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Nominations will be processed on September 17.

Nominations can be withdrawn till 3 p.m. on September 20. Polling will be held between 7.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.

Counting will be done on September 28.

Mettur level

The inflow was 6,641 cusecs, and the discharge 11,991 cusecs.
