Electricity commission rationalises connection charges

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, SEPT. 12. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) has rationalised miscellaneous charges levied on consumers.

The rates of Rs. 450 and 700 for a low-tension three-phase connection (except agricultural service) will be replaced with a single rate of Rs. 500, according to a statement.

Erection charges, hitherto applicable for flats in Chennai, have been dispensed with.

The changes take effect from October 1, following an order issued by the Commission after the August 31 meeting.

However, no change has been effected in the meter caution deposit (MCD) rate of Rs. 700 for the domestic category (single phase) while the charge for other categories has been reduced to Rs. 700 from Rs. 1,000. The existing MCD rate for three-phase service will continue.

As for reconnection, there are now simplified rates for LT connections. The new rates will be Rs. 60 for cut out/overhead reconnection and Rs. 300 for underground reconnection. The rate of Rs. 5 for replacement of white meter cards will continue.

Registration charges have been rationalised as Rs. 50 for LT services (except the special rate of Rs. 5 for huts) and Rs. 500 for HT service. At present, the charges range from Rs. 20 to 150 for LT and HT services.

As regards to name transfer of ownership of connections, the new charges will be Rs. 200 for LT (except hut services) and Rs. 2,000 for HT services. The practice of collecting earnest money deposit (EMD) only from LT industrial and HT categories will continue. For HT connections, only one rate of Rs. 800 per KVA will be levied instead of the present three different charges.

Service charges on dishonoured cheques for Rs. 100 for LT and Rs. 500 for HT connections have been done away with. A fee of Rs. 250 will be collected for all services.

The TNERC order has been hosted on the web site, www.tnerc.org
