RAMANATHAPURAM, SEPT. 12. The Puthiya Tamizhagam president, K. Krishnasamy, has opposed the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project saying that it would pose a threat to the livelihood of lakhs of fishermen. Speaking to pressmen here today, he said the Centre was pursuing the process of implementation of the project without giving guarantee to their livelihood. Terming the public hearing as "eyewash" he said instead of listening to the people's concerns, the officials were trying to justify the implementation of the project. He asked who could give guarantee to fishermen, living along the coastal areas from Rameswaram to Tuticorin if dredging activities disturbed their fishing. About 100 environmentalists and non-governmental organisations, who gathered here under the banner of Tamil Nadu Environment Council, have decided to step up their struggle to stop the project. L. Antony Samy, founder, TNEC said environmentalists would take all possible efforts to stall the project as it would render a severe blow not only to fishermen but also to the ecology of the Gulf of Mannar.
