KHAMMAM, SEPT. 12. The Andhra Pradesh State Sarpanches' Sangham president, Padala Venkata Ramreddy, has sought direct funding to gram panchayats. Addressing a news conference here today, he said gram panchayats would be able to decide their priorities and utilise the funds made available to them accordingly if the Government opted for direct funding.
Powers to local bodies
He wanted that the Government strengthen local bodies by giving them powers and funds as per the 73rd and 74th amendments. Gram panchayats were yet to get their share of funds under the 10th and 11th Finance Commission. He said that the sangham would take recourse to agitational programmes if the Government failed to consider the demands of local bodies. He said that the sangham would hold a State-level conference in Hyderabad in the third week of September to discuss issues pertaining to village development and administration. The demands would be taken up with the Government on the occasion, he said.
