Minister promises support for Lions Clubs' welfare projects

CHENNAI, SEPT. 12. At the end of the programme, the physically-challenged came out with their tricycles and artificial limbs, the women wheeled out their new sewing machines, those who wished to start petty shops got an iron box and many more from the Mega Project organised by Lions Club International District 324 A-1.

The Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, S. Regupathy, chose to philosophise as he stressed the need to serve society. Inaugurating the distribution of various implements to 750 physically challenged persons, the Minister said, "It is difficult to come across anybody without bad qualities. But just as a bee chooses the flower among leaves and thorns, we must try to ignore the bad and contribute our mite to society by doing something useful."

The Minister promised support for welfare projects of the Lions Clubs.

Senior International Director of the Lions Clubs International, Chigurupathi Varapasad, said there should be greater co-ordination between the Government and NGOs. The problems facing the country should be listed out and distributed to various service organisations who would extend their help to work together with the Government.

N.S. Sankar, District Governor, said the Mega Project of the Clubs involved distribution of equipment worth Rs. 14.83 lakhs to 750 physically challenged and deprived persons of society. He outlined the various social welfare activities of the Lions Clubs. S. Natarajan, Vice-District Governor and Govindasamy Thangaraj, vice-chairman of the project also spoke.

Later in the evening, Mr. Varaprasad inaugurated a renovated, air-conditioned auditorium at Lions Edifice for Service Trust and the upgraded and improved facilities at Swami Vivekananda Diagnostic Centre run by the Lions Club of Anna Nagar and Lions Club of Metro Central Medicare Centre at the D.G. Vaishnav College. The Diagnostic Centre offers a master health check-up of tests of haematology, lipid profile, microbiology, biochemistry, enzymes, clinical pathology, ECG, X-ray and ultrasound test for the abdomen for Rs. 495.
