CHENNAI, SEPT. 12. It was a proud moment for the 78 district toppers in the tenth and twelfth State Board examinations who were honoured with `Mudhalvan Awards' by E.V.K.S. Elangovan, Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, on Sunday.

Addressing the toppers at a function organised by Raj TV, Mr. Elangovan said student life was an important phase, which determined the later performance and success of an individual.

The awards, being presented by Raj TV for the fifth consecutive year, covered toppers from 30 districts of the State.

Career decision

Appreciating students' efforts, he said they must carefully contemplate career decisions, as choice of a suitable career played a significant part in one's success. Students must also look for new avenues to excel in their careers as it gave ample opportunities for creative ideas and better productivity.

He advised the students not to restrict their learning with an examination attitude, but develop a thirst for knowledge about the subject of their interest. "Take efforts to learn beyond school books as knowledge building will help you emerge as a topper in any field you get into."

Mr. Elangovan later distributed certificates and trophies to students who topped in their respective district.

Tamil film actor, Parthipan, and the managing director of Vasanth and Co, Vasanth Kumar, also lauded the students.

The chairman of Kishkintha theme park, Appachan, also participated. For the toppers, it was also a two-day fun-packed holiday. As part of their awards package, the winners were taken to Kishkintha, on a roving tour of the city and on visits to the Planetarium and War Memorial. They were also given free scholarships worth Rs. 18,000 by CSE Computer Education. SRM College of Arts and Science won first prize in an inter-collegiate competition conducted on the occasion.
