NEW DELHI, SEPT. 12. They are known for being the "studious'' kinds. Only now, the students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) have a whole new reason to spend the `night' in the library. In a major initiative aimed at helping students with their studies, the University has cleared the book bank facility and decided to make the reading facility available round-the-clock. A long standing demand of the students union, the University will soon establish a book bank that will serve as a one stop place for some of the most read and issued books in the University library. "The idea behind setting up a book bank is to put together a collection of all books that students require more frequently. Multiple copies of books will be kept to ensure more students can make use of the facility. Discussed with students for a long time, it has taken time to make the list of books most read by students as we have research students as well as those at the M.A. and B.A. level with each one requiring different kinds of material,'' said the JNU Rector, Balveer Arora. But that's not all. In a major initiative, the University has also decided to extend the timing of the library. While the text book section will now be open till midnight, the much popular Dholpur House, the reading room which has served as the preparation ground of almost all students here will now be open 24 hours. "It has been decided to keep it open for 24 hours on an experimental basis as students don't always find the necessary environment in their hostel rooms. We are, however, still looking into the security aspect and planning to get a wall constructed as a replacement for the wooden partition so that the rest of the library is secure,'' said Balveer Arora. For students, the news comes as a big boon. "We have been working hard to get the library timing changed for a long time now. In fact, a lot of time was spent preparing the list of books needed by students the most. With students getting the books for only one day, the period could be used only for making Xerox copies. But with multiple copies being made available, more students will be able to now benefit,'' said Ena, the vice-president of the JNUSU.
